Benny Gold

Another great San Francisco brand! Benny Gold, if you have not heard of him yet, is a graphic designer who has done work with many great brands such as Huf, Mash, 510, Bows and Arrows, etc. He started his own brand with just a sticker. JUST A STICKER(!) People started posting them around the city and it just caught on. His hard work is paying off and now he's opening his own retail store in the Mission. It's always an amazing and inspiring thing when somebody local can find success in what Rude Etiquette is also trying to acheive. Hopefully the Rudes can make it down to the opening!

Mister/Mr. INVS

So, I went down on a great trip downtown today without the other Rudes :(...they both had work today. But, I went down on a mission to pick up some new henley's that INVS have put out. I was a fan of the brand before, but now that I'm getting to know the fam down there and just the overall vision...(no words)...I just really have so much respect for them. And with the creation of their new menswear line entitled Mister or Mr. it just makes me want to work harder to achieve what they're doing. The new henley tees they have out come in three colorways, have GREAT details and just a great fit. They are also MADE IN SAN FRANCISCO! That just blows my mind! I have so much pride and love for San Francisco that to own a shirt that is MADE in the same city I was made is amazing!

Tom himself is an incredible individual. This was only the second time I've actually spoken with him, but he made it feel like we've known each other for a while. He shared his vision for the Mister line and it's almost exaclty what we at Rude Etiquette want to achieve one day. We also had a great conversation about women's wear and how it may or may not be able to be done. Like I've said before, the ultimate goal for us is to get into the cut and sew world, but not just for men's, but for women as well. Tom made some great points, like how there are the H&M's and Forever 21's to compete with, but hopefully we can build a great loyal fan base that knows us for the quality and style that we strive for even in our t-shirts. INVS's Mister line is a another great step forward for an already amazing brand. Please check them out at www.invisiblestripes.com and check out their shop down on Post St.! You won't regret it!

Hustler's State of Mind

It was honestly an epiphany for me when I just decided to finally DO something with my life and start Rude Etiquette. I knew I didn't want to work for anybody but myself when I got older (which is why I wanted to be a writer). So, believe me when I say that although we're small and pretty much unknown to the rest of the world...I'm happy to wake up each morning knowing that I own my own clothing brand and am grinding it out. And I know that the grind will never stop, but hopefully it will ease up a bit and we will see the light of success : ).

W.H.A.T. Now?!

First off, we would like to thank Jared, Rene, and FUSION for providing us with the opportunity to participate in our first ever showcase/vendor event. We are so happy to have been apart of something so inspiring and amazing! Thank you! :)

So, the W.H.A.T. Now?! event went down this past Friday, and it was definitely an experience to say the least. We went into it knowing that NOBODY has heard of us and just hoping that we would sell a few t-shirts. And we more or less achieved that. I can't lie and say I didn't hope for our product to be a hit and we would sell out of our product; but, I knew the reality was that it was going to be a grind. And in that aspect, I'm happy that we didn't sell tons of product. It may sound weird, but I don't want Rude Etiquette to be an instant hit. I want us to, not necessarily struggle, but WORK for any success we may come into. I guess it comes from my history with music. I love bands that work hard and tour relentlessy to try and gain exposure. I have more respect for a band that has spent years on the road with the DIY mentality, than a band that formed two weeks ago and got signed to a major label. I want our followers to feel a loyalty to the brand, through the ups and downs and through its evolutions.

Anyways....

We were fortunate/unfortunate to be situated between two brands that are better established than we are: Know Your Roots and RADisRAD. I personally have only heard of RADisRAD, which is a brand based out of Southern California. And man were they intimidating. They had a TON of stock and (as seen below) and a very legit set up. They also constantly drew a crowd of customers while we silently watched on...haha. KYR are more local, based out of the Militpas area. They even had their own spot at the Great Mall! But, big shout out to those brands! They were very gracious to us and provided encouraging words and sound advice.

Rudie looking awesome!

STICKERS!

That little girl could SING!

We all didn't eat lunch and didn't know the event would last as long as it did :/...so the last few pictures are of what was left of our Chevy's meals because we were all so hungry!!!

So once again, thanks to Jared, Rene, and FUSION for the opportunity and a big shout out to the fellow vendors at the show: Truth, RADisRAD, KYR, and Adobe Street Connection!

Debuts at Jack Adam's

As the W.H.A.T. Now? event looms ever closer, I thought I'd share some cool new things that we'll be debuting at the event! First off are our stickers! We've recieved on of the two stickers we'll have at the event for all of you to have (for FREE.99!!!) If you take one, please promise us you'll post them everywhere to help spread the Rude word! We were lucky and the printing company provided us with more stickers than we actually ordered! So yay for that! Hopefully they do the same for the other sticker :).

Secondly, we'll also have our new SF Bike tee!(No preview pic for this! You'll have to come to the event to see one or watch enviously as someone walks by with one on :]) It's a special edition shirt we thought of making after we found out we'd be participating in the event. It was thrown together quickly and we hope you all like them! What's SUPER special about the SF tee is that they're going to be the VERY FIRST batch of shirts/products that will have our own size tags on them! That may not seem like a big thing to some, but it's a very big step/deal for us Rudes! We're so excited to see how they turn out! Here's a preview of what they'll look like:

We specifically use American Apparel products so that we can proudly put "Made in the U.S.A." on our labels. Overall it's a little pricier, but I feel that using American made products is essential for quality goods. Plus, I don't want to exploit overseas labor :/. Hopefully we can continue this trend into the future.

The W.H.A.T. Now? event is a big step for Rude Etiquette. It will be the biggest audience we've had that are not friends or family and that don't know about the brand. It would be great if you guys can come out and support us! ..."every step an arrival"...

Maestro Knows - Episode 6 (Johnny Cupcakes) from Maestro Knows on Vimeo.

If you don't follow Maestro, you're definitley missing out. He is a very inspiring and positive individual who has accomplished a lot by doing what he loves. I found this video to be especially inspiring because it focused on Johnny Cupcakes. I remember when I first discovered Johnny Cupcakes a few years back and I really loved his cupcake and cross bone graphic and wanted a shirt; it's crazy to think that this one guy who sold his first shirts out of a trunk has turned what he loves into a multi-million dollar business. I hope to have even a fraction of that kind of success with Rude Etiquette...here's to dreaming big : )...

Rudetants: Rude&Refined

When I first conceived the idea of Rude Etiquette, I knew I wanted to incorporate women's wear into the brand. I did not want to limit myself to just doing men's wear, although that is where my passion lies (because I am a man). So, in order to have a women's wear division in Rude Etiquette, I needed a woman (duh...haha). This is where Ali Rude, or Alison, came into play. Ali and I have become quite good friends over the period of time we have known each other, and I have always noticed her own sense of style (I have on many occasions questioned it :]); but, I could never deny that she has good style. In fact, she recieves recognition for her outfits quite regularly when we rome the streets on our little adventures.

My actual overall vision for the women's wear is related to where I want Rude Etiquette to head to in the future: and that's beyond tees and graphics. I eventually want to produce our own clothing; such as wovens, denim, accessories etc. and that applies for both men and women.

so...explaining the title of this blog...

Rudetants: Rude&Refined was an idea of mine to give Ali more of a voice with the brand. You guys read my rants on this blog here and you can see Frankly Rude's work through our website and our t-shirt designs. So, Rudetants is where you can read and hear Ali's voice as well as get updates on where our women's wear is heading. Don't get me wrong, Ali is involved with everything we produce and do, I just thought I'd be a great way for her to share her thoughts to the world and her sense of unique fashion.

Rudetants is still a work in progress, but should be up soon. So, we'll let you know when it's launched and please read up on her blog as well as checking back here regularly to see what's going on with Rude Etiquette!

W.H.A.T. Now?

So...we have great people watching out for Rude Etiquette! (Big ups to Jared!) I was approached with the opportunity to be a vendor at the upcoming W.H.A.T. Now? event that's occuring on March 26 at S.F. State's Jack Adam's Hall. In all honesty, I was more hesitant than excited at first. Being such a small brand and basically just starting up, I didn't know if we were ready; but, how could we turn down such a great opportunity! SO...please come out and support F.U.S.I.O.N and the W.H.A.T. Now? event! Tickets are only $7 for pre-sale and $10 at the door. (More info in the flyer below)

We're going to have our own little spot amongst the other vendors (Rad is Rad, Know Your Roots, and Truth). We'll have our Inauguration Collection out on display, plus STICKERS(!!!!), and a special edition shirt we got made just for this special event! Let's just say it's very San Francisco inspired :). So please come out and support us and the other up and coming brands and just enjoy some great singing and dancing!

Rudie (The Roadie)

So we decided to make a little business investment, and we bought a vintage trunk! Haha...why you ask? Well...in light of the event we are apart of, we wanted something that could show our product in classic fashion. It was a random idea we had during our meeting Saturday, searched craigslist for a vintage trunk, and found this beauty for only $100! We waited nervously for about a day or so for a response, but finally got one yesterday! So, as part of the great adventure we had today, we picked this up and named her Rudie (The Roadie)!

I had to ask myself before we bought it what other use we could possibly have for Rudie and I reminded myself that the ultimate goal is to open up our own boutique/shop! So, Rudie would be part of the atmosphere of the shop and for now be a visual reminder and motivation for what we ultimately want to accomplish!

(ain't she a beaut???)

Welcome Home California

Today was a VERY busy day for Rude Etiquette. But, it could not have happened on a more beautiful day! It felt like California is back to it's old self! Don't get me wrong...I LOVE cold weather...but it was nice to have a nice warm day like today. And to think I was planning on staying in most of the day to do homework! Haha! But anyways...we started off by having lunch at In & Out, then headed out to get details for a special edition shirt done. The shirts are for an event we are going to be participating in and we'll be announcing it later today : ). We're very excited and I'm very nervous :/. haha...we also added on to the Rude family today! We'll introduce her (yes...it's a her) in the next post! We're very excited with the new edition and the vibe she brings to Rude Etiquette!

Sprinkles in your White Mocha? WHY NOT? It was goooood! :)

Frankly Rude's FAVORITE shop (RVCA)! He couldn't resist and got himself a few goodies!

Meeting of The Rudes: March 13, 2010

So, we finally had a gravely needed meeting today in lovely downtown San Mateo! We got our business card designs set and discussed our online shop! The business cards should be coming in soon, and hopefully the online shop will be up within the month or so! I had one too many coffees at the meeting and was a bit hyper, so I was extra enthusiastic today! But, we have reason to be! There is a lot in store for Rude Etiquette in the coming weeks and we are SO excited! IT'S GOOD TO BE A RUDE!

Late Spring/Summer Line 2010 Brainstorm

It's strange to think that the Rudes haven't had a proper meeting in a little while. But, we should be having one real soon, we have a lot to discuss! Our recent field trip was very informative, but we didn't really talk about Rude Etiquette. But, I did come up with a general concept for a possible Summer line. And like in a previous post, I use the word line loosely because we're not necessarily coming out with a whole line. I hope to get out a sweatshirt or two and hopefully 4 t-shirt designs. We're even in talks of doing some tank tops for this California weather we get in the summer!

So, the concept isn't entirely original, but what is nowadays? The idea is to have a "Rude Prep" or essentially a "Rude Summer School" line. School may be out for the summer, but Rude Prepatory is in session!...get it? haha...anyways...I actually wanted to do a Rude Prep kind of theme since the conception of Rude Etiquette, but thought it would be more fitting for a Fall/Winter line since that's when school starts up again. But, who says Rude Etiquette was ever conventional? I thought that having a "Summer School" line would be pretty fun and a nice twist on the whole school theme. Besides...I've got another idea in store for the Fall... ;)

here's a little preview of what we've been working on...keep in mind we are FAR from any finished products and these designs may not even make the cut or even see tomorrow...just wanted to keep you guys in the loop!

RetroTV: Blvck Scvle “Balance of Opposites”

here is the video that The Retrospective did with Mega and Black Scale:

RetroTV: Black Scale Balance of Opposites from The Retrospective on Vimeo.

It's AWESOME!

Rude Field Trip 03/08/10

Today the Rudes embarked on yet another great adventure to downtown San Francisco on another beautiful day where we made stops at some of our favorite boutiques to visit: INVS and Black Scale! It seems every time we make a visit to these shops we are never disappointed! We always leave with more information about how to start up a clothing brand, and overall just a great experience!

We stepped into the INVS shop and were greeted by Joelle (whom we are aquainted with from our last visit), Tom, and their adorable puppy Kitty! Tom was a great help giving us advice about finding cheaper places to print, label making, how to start our online shop, amongst other great tips! The way in which INVS are progressing as a brand is incredible and highly motivating. They are so much more than just t-shirts and graphics; with their clean aesthetic, they have produced a great leather jacket and an awesome varsity jacket (which I missed out on getting :( ) with great products including henley t-shirts and beanies on the way. Their cut & sew products are what we at Rude Etiquette hope to achieve one day.
We then made what we thought would be a quick stop at Black Scale to see if either Alex or Alfred (whom we met during our last visit) were working; but, we ended up meeting the man behind Black Scale himself: Mega. When I meet people who I follow rather religiously online, I tend to see them as mini-celebrities. So, when I say that it was an honor to finally meet Mega, I mean that it was an honor. The things Mega has done to grow the Black Scale brand is incredible and the product that Black Scale churn out season after season just seems to become better and better. Walking into the store this time, I got a chance to see their new button ups and their new denim, and believe me, it's all amazing! Talking to Mega was truly inspiring; he gave us tips on trends across the world, the pros and cons of using US made products, and just great conversation. It's always great to discover that one of your inspirations is down to earth the way Mega is. I hope that we encounter Mega again and have another great conversation.

We also had the pleasure of meeting Gitamba and Matt of The Retrospective. They did an awesome video with Mega that kind of dissected the essence behind Black Scale. Gitamba was gracious enough to give us his card, an interest in our brand, and the hopes of a future collaboration.

We would love to thank Tom & Joelle of INVS, Mega, and Gitamba and Matt for your time and words of wisdom! We hope that our relationships can continue beyond today. We'll see you guys soon!
